Successful comeback! OTTO WULFF sailing duo Burke & Fink start the Globe40 final

The final leg of the Globe40 regatta around the globe has started and Lennart Burke and Melwin Fink are taking part. Setting sail from Recife towards Lorient is already a small victory for the OTTO WULFF sailing duo, but they want more.

"We're fired up and looking forward to stepping on the gas again and battling our way to France," says Melwin. From Recife in Brazil, the fleet will sail around 4,300 nautical miles (approx. 8,000 kilometers) across the Atlantic back to Lorient. This is where the regatta around the globe began last September. "We are looking forward to sailing home and to the grand finale in France," says Melwin.

Setback in the Indian Ocean
About four months ago, it was almost unthinkable that the OTTO WULFF sailing duo would sail the final leg of the double-handed regatta. In the middle of the Indian Ocean, a crucial part of the mast of the "Next Generation Boating Around The World" broke and a small world collapsed for the Hamburg duo. Melwin and Lennart had to abandon the third leg and return to La Reunion.

OTTO WULFF as a reliable partner
But after the shock came the fight for a comeback. The repairs on La Reunion were successful and the Class40 was successfully ferried some 6,500 nautical miles to Brazil - a great team effort, with OTTO WULFF always at the side of the youngest sailing duo in the regatta as a reliable partner.

Now Lennart and Melwin are back in their element after tough months with many challenges. "Being in the race is the very best thing," says Melwin, who is passionate about the fascination of offshore sailing.

"You surf down the waves, the boat accelerates to over 20 knots, crashes into the next wave, the deck is flooded, salt water splashes in your face and it's just about sailing fast," enthuses the 24-year-old. "I'd almost say it feels like flying, but that wouldn't be fair. It feels better than flying."

Across the equator again
However, the final chapter of their exciting journey has not yet been written. On the way to Lorient, "we cross the equator again. That means we're going through the Doldrums again, where anything can happen," explains Melwin. The intra-tropical convergence zone is a grab bag. Lennart is nevertheless confident: "We'll have really good conditions for our boats as far as the Azores.

From the Azores onwards, anything is possible again. "We'll probably have downwind conditions. But the wind can also come from any direction and low-pressure areas can give us bad weather," says Melwin, who has never sailed this route with Lennart before.

The OTTO WULFF duo is expecting 16 to 18 days on the high seas for the last leg of the Globe40. And one thing is clear after the tough fight for the comeback: "We're really up for it."
